“Unity has been a special experience for me because it has taught me to appreciate my own resilience and adaptability. Life has been rough for a lot of the time I鈥檝e been in school, so it means a lot to me that Unity gives me ample time.” Balancing a busy career, family life, and personal dreams is no easy feat, but Xavier is making it happen. From detailing cars to being a touring musician, Xavier鈥檚 life was full鈥攜et something was missing. Thanks to Unity’s Distance Education program, he鈥檚 finally working toward his long-held dream of earning a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Wildlife Conservation, all while juggling his many responsibilities.
Residing in West Virginia with his family, Xavier鈥檚 decision to enroll at Unity was largely influenced by the school鈥檚 flexibility. As a husband, full-time working professional, and father of two, traditional education wasn鈥檛 an option. The online program at Unity proved to be the perfect solution. 鈥淭he online option to obtain a degree encompassing wildlife was so appealing,鈥� Xavier says. 鈥淓specially to a person like me, juggling work and family.鈥�
Xavier鈥檚 love for wildlife, particularly reptiles, began at a young age. 鈥淎s a child, I always told my mother I wanted to be a marine biologist,鈥� he recalls. 鈥淏ut opportunities didn鈥檛 come quick enough, and I strayed from that path.鈥� It wasn鈥檛 until his mid-20s, when he started keeping reptiles as a personal hobby, that his passion for wildlife conservation reignited. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 when I realized I should have never given up on my dream of doing what I can to save and educate about the wildlife we share our world with. Reptiles led me to this, but I stayed for the wonder of it all.鈥�
Xavier is focused on gaining the knowledge and skills he needs to make a difference鈥攏ot just for himself, but for his family. 鈥淚鈥檓 hoping that with my education, I can lead my sons in the right direction and open doors for them to new experiences and knowledge that I didn鈥檛 have access to as a child,鈥� he explains.
When asked what makes Unity a special experience, Xavier is quick to highlight the program鈥檚 blend of academic rigor and real-world application. 鈥淯nity has taught me to appreciate my own resilience and adaptability,鈥� he says. 鈥淟ife has been rough for a lot of the time I鈥檝e been in school, so it means a lot to me that Unity gives me ample time to get an education but also forces me to get out of my shell.鈥� The fieldwork and community engagement have been particularly valuable. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an excellent way to combine textbook learning with field studies, and that鈥檚 been transformative for me.鈥�
For Xavier, the journey has been long and winding, but it鈥檚 clear that the best is yet to come. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited about where this is all heading,鈥� he says. And with his resilience, curiosity, and newfound purpose, there鈥檚 no doubt that Xavier will make a lasting impact in the world of wildlife conservation.
